A seminar titled “Urban Development and Architecture of Cihangir” was brought to life in partnership with Cihangir Beautification Association (Cihangir Güzelleşme Derneği), Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (ICM), and the IGU Environment, Urbanization and Earth Sciences Application and Research Center (CSYBUAM), with the vision of preserving the historical texture and cultural values of the district. The first leg of the two-stage event, which aims to examine the effects of the demolition and renovation works that have gained momentum in Cihangir in recent years on the unique architectural quality of the district, was completed on May 14, 2026, with intense participation.

Comprehensive field studies and urban conservation area

Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören, who took part as a speaker at the event, shared a comprehensive presentation with the participants by reviewing the academic and field studies conducted on Cihangir to date. At the event, which also included our faculty members and students, the urban conservation area status of the district and the transformation pains it faces in this context were discussed in detail.

Layered architectural memory and the balance between conservation and use

Among the invited speakers of the seminar, Architect Zafer Akay and Author Ahmet Soysal conveyed the layered architectural memory and social history of Cihangir to the participants, based on their own original research. In the speeches delivered, it was strongly emphasized that urban renewal projects should be carried out by observing a conservation-use balance, without destroying the identity of the district.

We would like to thank Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören, our invited speakers, and all stakeholders who contributed for their scientific contributions at this valuable event that sheds light on the cultural heritage and future of the district.
