Res. Asst. Başak Lale Participated in “Data in Crises: Responding to the Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria” Seminar!
Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF), Department of Interior Architecture Res. Asst. Başak Lale attended the online seminar “Data in Crises: Responding to the Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria” held on March 3, 2023.
National and international experts such as Dr. Samer Attar, Joseph T. Nallen, Can Ünen, Özge Acar, and Nathaniel Raymond took part as speakers at the seminar held on October 3, 2023, at 20.00. The focus of the seminar was the earthquake that took place last month and caused great losses. The scope of the seminar was described by the event coordinators as follows:
“As of February 18, the death toll from the earthquake that hit Turkey at the beginning of February exceeds 46,000. Combining factors such as freezing temperatures, Turkey's economic woes, and the current refugee crisis exacerbate the disaster's effects. In addition, a cholera epidemic that started in Syria in August 2022 and pre-existing respiratory diseases in both countries are exacerbating the public health effects of the disaster. As organizations struggle to respond to the immediate effects of the disaster and the death toll continues to rise, the long-term effects of earthquakes are of great importance. To mitigate the severity of these long-term effects, responders need to know how the dynamics of population displacement evolve as critical infrastructure continues to be destroyed. Providing essential medicines and care for the people who need them is also critical. Organized in collaboration with the Harvard Data Science Initiative, we bring together a group of experts to discuss how data can be used to understand both the immediate and long-term effects of this disaster. Representatives from the Syrian American Medical Association, Humanitarian OpenStreet Map, and Yale University are participating in the discussion. (URL 1)”

“Thanks to this event, which brings together researchers and experts from different countries and fields, on how to coordinate in such a disaster environment; We had the opportunity to examine the probability scenarios and completed examples. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the event.”
Thanks to Res. Asst. Başak Lale. We wish you continued success.
