 New presentation by faculty members of the Communication and Design Department!
Research Assistant Dr. Büşra Kılıç and Vice Dean Assoc. Prof. Sezgin Savaş from the Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Communication and Design Department, presented their paper titled "The Role of Deepfake in the Illusion of Reality in Digital Memory: An Example from TikTok" at the VII. International New Media Conference, themed "From Digital Content Production to Consumption: Media and Social Transformation," held on October 10-11, 2024.

The paper explores the expansion of the concept of memory in the digitalizing world and the emergence of digital memory. The authors examined the differences between humans storing their past experiences and knowledge in their minds to sustain life, and the storage of data in digital environments. Digital memory was discussed as an extensive structure that allows data stored on the internet to surpass human limitations.

The study specifically investigated how deepfake technology is used, particularly on the social media platform TikTok. Through the examination of a specific account, the researchers analyzed the impact of deepfake-produced content on followers. It was observed that while some followers were unaware that the account was fake, others knowingly followed it for entertainment purposes.

This significant study sheds light on the effects of deepfake technology in the digital world, where digital identities’ security and the perception of reality become blurred. Kılıç and Savaş’s valuable contributions provide an important perspective on academic studies concerning media and social transformation.
