Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) organized Turkey’s first “Art and Image Directors Respect Award”, which TURVAK Movie Theater Museum (Turkey İnanoğlu Foundation) has sponsored for venue and press.
Workers who work behind the camera as art director and cinematographer for more than 30 years will be awarded with “Professional Service Award” by Istanbul Gelisim University and Istanbul Studies Application and Research Center at the event held in TURVAK Cinema and Theater Hall.
Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Cinema and TV Alumni Association, Association of Cinematographers and Cinema and Television Union were among the stakeholders of event.
“FIRST FINE ARTS FACULTY ACCREDITED IN TURKEY”
Rector Prof. Dr. Aykaç stated that they are very proud. He said: “IGU is one of the youngest, most sympathetic and dynamic universities in Turkey. One of our three faculties is the Faculty of Fine Arts and it is very important for us. We applied for accreditation of all departments of our faculty and they will be accredited this year. The first accredited faculty of fine arts in Turkey will become our faculty.”
WE WANT THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENE TO BE APPRECIATED
Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts Prof. Dr. Güçlü said: “There is an increasing interest for the department of Cinema and Television. The interest in cinema and television is increasing day by day and our students are making great efforts to be enrolled in here. The reason for this is that our lecturers who teach in our faculty are highly skilled and experienced. It is impossible to find this academic staff somewhere else.”
We want to feature the people who are behind the scene and we want the society and our students to become aware of their importance. We are thankful to TURVAK because of the venue and its contribution to this organization. We will continue in the coming years.”
“THERE ARE MORE STUDENTS THAN CINEMA NUMBERS”
Art Director Duygu Sağıroğlu, who received an award in the ceremony said: “I am always with youth. I have been a lecturer for 40 years. I always ask them why they want to become involved in cinema sector. Because there are more students than cinema numbers. Cinemas are empty, number of audience is very low. The large cinema halls do not exist anymore. Yes, they can study, but then they have to act like a slave in the sector. The cameras are lighter now, but they need to carry those as if they are slaves. They need to be trained by real masters. Just knowledge is useless in cinema sector.”
“CINEMA IS A MASTER-APPRENTICE RELATIONSHIP”
Cinematographer Uğur İçbak said: “There is no aging or retirement in cinema sector. We are always at sets as long as we are healthy, I am coming from sets now. We train and assist young people. This event is also perfect. Cinema is all about transfer of knowledge and professional sharing. It is a master-apprentice relationship. Therefore, we always like to be in events such as this and meet young cinema artists. I also see my friends from former generations.”
“ALTHOUGH THE TECHNOLOGY CHANGES, THIS JOB IS ALWAYS DONE IN SAME WAY”
İçbak added that there are too many cinema schools and continued:
“Of course we do have new friends, new cinematographers, they do great work. Technology is changing, we follow instantly. However, the style and artist identity remains same. We create a visual atmosphere with light; whether we record it via iPhone, developed IMax cameras or 3D. We are not technical personnel who only use camera. The quality and uniqueness of this profession will continue in the future.”
