 Res. Asst. Merve Karadaban was a guest in the "Modelling" course!
Res. Asst. Merve Karadaban from the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, Istanbul Gelişim University, was invited as a "guest lecturer" by Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlke CİRİTCİ, Res. Asst. Burcu KORKUT, Res. Asst. Hazal TÜRKMEN YAZGAÇ, the instructors of the "ARC260 Modeling" course conducted in the Department of Architecture (English) of the Faculty of Architecture and Engineering, Istanbul Gelişim University, on December 6, 2024.

In the "ARC260 Modeling" course to which she was invited, Res. Asst. Merve Karadaban discussed Kevin Lynch's book The Image of the City, how cities are perceived by people, how Kevin Lynch tried to measure this perception, and how his method shaped urban planning. In addition, he stated that it is necessary to focus on the context in which Lynch published this work and underlined the rapid urbanization and suburbanization process in the USA after World War II. He also mentioned that the work can be described as a search for a solution to the loss of identity and lack of spatial integrity of cities in the period.

He also conveyed how Lynch analyzed the impression a city leaves on the human mind and the relationship of this impression with the design of the physical environment through "mental maps". In addition, Lynch's 5 basic elements of the city (paths, edges, districts, nodes, landmarks) were discussed with the students for the next lesson of "ARC260 Modeling" in Karaköy. The observation points that can be made regarding the area were determined based on these 5 physical elements.
