Encaustic technique and its projections in contemporary art: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysun Cançat’s article has been published

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysun Cançat, a faculty member at Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Graphic Design (GRA), has published her article titled "Encaustic Technique and Its Projections in Contemporary Art" in the Ahmet Yakupoğlu Special Issue of D-Sanat Magazine. The study examines one of the oldest painting techniques in history and its modern-day applications.

In her study, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysun Cançat focuses on the encaustic technique—one of the most ancient painting methods dating back to Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Rome. Analyzing this unique technique where beeswax serves as the primary material, the article explores its evolution from antiquity to contemporary art practices. The research provides a comparative analysis between the earliest historical applications and modern examples of the technique.

The research highlights the striking conceptual dimension behind the use of beeswax in combination with various materials. The survival of this ancient technique is regarded not only as the preservation of cultural heritage but also as a critical element in liberating future artistic techniques. Conceived as a curated selection, the study aims to raise awareness about these historical and technical intersections.

Structured through a qualitative research process, the article analyzes the old and new uses of the technique within the context of art history literature, specifically focusing on the relationship between essence and form. Supported by document analysis, the study presents holistic and realistic results, offering a critical perspective on the enduring significance of the encaustic technique in the art world.

As the Department of Graphic Design, we congratulate our esteemed professor for crowning her academic expertise with this significant publication and wish her continued success.
