The research article titled "A Spatial Assessment of Street Music in Metro Transportation Stations" by Asst. Prof. Dr. Adem Özer, Department of Interior Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts, Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), has been published in the December 2024 issue of ART/icle: Art and Design Magazine!
In his research article titled "A Spatial Assessment of Street Music in Metro Transportation Stations", Asst. Prof. Dr. Adem Özer of Istanbul Gelisim University analyzed the performance areas of street musicians in metro stations and offered suggestions for the spatial and functional improvement of these areas.
The article evaluates the current situation of public spaces where street musicians perform in metro stations and draws attention to the need to make these areas more comfortable and efficient for both artists and listeners. In the study, on-site observations were made in some of the most frequently used metro stations in Istanbul and area analyses were conducted. In this context, it is emphasized that spatial arrangements can increase the interaction between street musicians and passengers, and that musical performances can provide a better experience.
In addition, this research examines the evolution of street music in public spaces in a historical context, and examines the effects of urbanization processes and public transportation networks on artistic production. The findings obtained in the study indicate that increasing the areas allocated to art in urban planning is not only an aesthetic gain, but also an element that strengthens social interaction. The idea that public spaces such as metro stations, especially in big cities, can be places where cultural identities are kept alive and developed constitutes one of the main starting points of this study. While the study of Asst. Prof. Dr. Adem Özer emphasizes the contribution of street musicians to society, it also touches on the importance of designing better spaces where these artists can perform. Thanks to the model designs proposed in the study, it is aimed to evaluate metro stations as artistic and social meeting points, beyond being just transportation points.
We congratulate Asst. Prof. Dr. Adem Özer and wish him continued success!
