 “GSF Interior Architecture Students Design Containers for Earthquake Victims”


Organized by Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF) Interior Architecture, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (TR-ING) Departments, the “Container Living Space Design Project” was completed with a series of events held between 17 March and 03 April 2023. The process, which started with the information meeting held online over Google Meet on March 17, resulted in the delivery of students on April 03, 2023, after the jury held online over Google Meet on March 31.


Organized jointly by Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF) Department of Interior Architecture & Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (TR and ING), the event was titled "Container Living Space Design Project", with the lecturers, students, and industry leaders of Interior Architecture Departments. It started with an online information meeting on the Google Meet platform on Friday, March 17, 2023, with the participation of Safiye Ünal from Nuriş Prefabrik, one of the companies.

After the information meeting held on Friday, March 17, 2023, and on Monday, March 20, 2023, the second step of the process, the 'Workshop', started with eight student groups who announced their participation. The design process, which started with a consultant from the Department of Interior Architecture & Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (TR and ENG) for each student group, continued with the Jury held on Friday, March 31, 2023.

The jury started with the opening speech of Lecturer Selcen Nurcan Keskin Urmak, lecturer of the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design. Then, Halil Yektaş from Ender Prefabrik, who was included in the jury as the sector representative, introduced himself. After the briefing speech by Asst. Prof. Parvin Heidari, Deputy Head of the Department of Interior Architecture & Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (TR and ENG), the representatives of the student groups started to present their projects.

Basic Information About the Considerations in Container Design is Given

After completing the design process, which they conducted through online meetings for a week, the student groups started to present their designs in turn. Ecem Derya and Ömer Tohumoğlu from Lecturer Minel Kurtuluş's group, Beyza Palut from Lecturer Büşra Babacan's group, Sena Ertuğrul from Lecturer Enver Tatlısu's group, Melek Çelik from Lecturer İbrahim Erol's group, Erman Yerlikaya from asst. Prof. Dr. Adem Özer's group, Yağmursu Akdemir from Lecturer Serenay İnceoğlu's group, Sümeyye Gürsoy from Lecturer Selcen Nurcan Keskin Urmak's group, and Hazal Balıkçı and Ecenur Kut from Asst. Prof. Dr. Parvin Heidari's group made project presentations of the groups they are members of.

Design Phase Completed

Within the scope of the "Living Space Design in Container" project, which was organized to bring a design proposal to the container cities to be established for the earthquake victims whose houses were damaged in the February 6 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, each group started the design process with the concept they determined with the support of their advisors. He completed the designs at the Google Meet meetings held by the groups themselves for a week. A criticism was given to the projects designed by the jury, which is the last stage of the design process. After the projects were finalized according to the criteria, the deliveries took place on April 03, 2023. We are planning to meet you at the exhibition that will be held in the coming weeks. In addition, the students in the teams will have the opportunity to experience the container production process with the planned technical trip, upon the invitation of a container company, one of the leading representatives of the industry. All our students who are involved in the project process will be presented with a certificate of participation as a thank you for their efforts.

The Conversation Was Held With The Intense Interest of The Students

The workshop was attended by approximately 40 students and Interior Architecture Department Head Parvin Heidari, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department Vice President Lecturer Selcen Nurcan Keskin Urmak, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (Eng.) Department Vice President Lecturer İbrahim Erol, Interior Architecture Departments lecturers, Asst. Prof. Dr. Adem Özer, Lecturer Gökhan Balcıoğlu, Lecturer Serenay İnceoğlu, Lecturer Enver Tatlısu, Res. Asst. Tuğçe Öztürk, Res. Asst. Merve Karadaban, Res. Asst. Başak Lale and Res. Asst. Mustafa Dallı ended at 15.30.
