Asst. Prof. İbrahim Erol contributes to post-disaster architectural discourse!
Asst. Prof. İbrahim Erol, Chair of the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (Tr&Eng) at Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), continues to contribute significantly to the discourse on post-disaster urban planning and architectural solutions. Erol participated in the Seventh Session of the “Rebuilding Kahramanmaraş: Post-Disaster Urban Planning and Reconstruction Processes Conference” with his paper titled “An Adaptive Design Approach to Crisis Architecture: Indoor Sports Facilities”.
Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (Tr&Eng), faculty member and Chair of Department, Asst. Prof. İbrahim Erol, took part in the “Rebuilding Kahramanmaraş: Post-Disaster Urban Planning and Reconstruction Processes Conference,” held on the second anniversary of the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, where innovative approaches to post-disaster urban development were discussed. In his presentation titled “An Adaptive Design Approach to Crisis Architecture: Indoor Sports Facilities,” Erol highlighted the potential roles that architectural design can play in times of crisis and disaster.
In his paper, Erol emphasized that indoor sports facilities can be refunctioned not only for sports purposes, but also as alternative spaces capable of meeting society’s basic needs—such as shelter, healthcare, and safety—during times of disaster and pandemics. Drawing on recent cases like the Covid-19 pandemic and the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, he proposed spatial solutions that are flexible and multi-functional. He stated that this design approach, which prioritizes flexibility, rapid response, and sustainability, could enhance societal resilience during crisis scenarios.
Erol, who has examined the adaptive reuse of indoor sports facilities during pandemic processes in his doctoral thesis, continues to develop both academic and applied knowledge in the fields of disaster-resilient design, adaptive reuse, and sustainable architecture. With a comprehensive perspective, he aims to persist in producing disaster-conscious, responsive, and contemporary interior spaces through his ongoing academic and sectoral work.
We thank Asst. Prof. İbrahim Erol for his valuable contributions and wish him continued success in his academic journey.
