Asst. Prof. Dr.Merve Şahika Tan Evaluated the Use of Recreation Areas During the Pandemic Process

Asst. Prof. Dr. Merve Şahika Tan from Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF) Department of Interior Architecture and Interior Architecture Environmental Design evaluated the use of recreation areas during the pandemic process, especially the individual and social benefits of recreation, through the pandemic process inhibiting these benefits.

Recreational spaces, which are quite diverse in terms of architecture, point to a wide working area due to this diversity. The main context of recreation is based on its individual, physical and social contribution to people. However, during the current pandemic process, most of these places have been closed for use due to the inconveniences of people coming together. Although these closures are based on social health, they inevitably create a deficiency in terms of other benefits that recreation places provide to people.

While both the health and social gains of a group of friends walking in the park are eliminated, it was also found necessary in order not to put social health at risk. In this case, organizations were organized where people could communicate for social or sports purposes without coming together physically through online methods, and this deficiency was tried to be eliminated. However, just at this point, space design approaches, features of space that affect human behavior, and spatial perception had to disappear. Because the main thing in recreation is not only the actions but also the space. Your home gym may not motivate you to move as much as a gym. For this reason, people who have the opportunity have tried to motivate themselves spatially by making various arrangements in their own houses.

In these days, when the work from home system is included in our lives, physical space changes are needed primarily for working in the house, but physical arrangements for recreation are also quite a lot. However, it is not a very realistic approach to expect individuals to solve their recreational activities in the house, while various disruptions occur even for the working order of their own houses. For this reason, knowing that the primary purpose is public health, various arrangements should be made to reopen recreation areas. Some regulations, such as reducing the number of users, designing various spatial partitions, not requiring indoor space for outdoor activities, should be determined with the support of space designers, and thus control mechanisms should be established in order to continue the recreational activities in which people gain significant gains and to compensate for the damage inflicted on the country's economy. . For example, spatial arrangements that would prevent people from being in crowded areas were insufficient especially for outdoor spaces. However, because people do not want to be deprived of these actions, they have put both themselves and the public health at risk. In order to prevent this from happening, it is necessary to make various arrangements in the context of spatial or urban equipment.

It will be easier to protect public health at the point where we can determine the behavioral needs of people and determine which action will be waived and to what extent, through the joint studies of different disciplines.”

We would like to thank Asst. Prof. Dr. Merve Şahika Tan for her valuable comments and contributions.
