Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF) Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (English) Department Research Assistant Mustafa Dallı's article titled “A Study of Curtain Wall and Earthquake Concept in the Architecture Departments in Turkey in terms of Curriculum Contents” , published in the fourteenth issue of the Chamber of Architects Kayseri Branch, “TOL: Kayseri Branch of the Chamber of Architects, Journal of Architecture and Culture”.

From the Abstract:

Decisions taken during the design phase and control and inspection during implementation are of great importance for curtain walls, which are one of the non-structural elements that are frequently used today, to be resistant to earthquakes. Especially in the regions located on the earthquake zone, issues such as what kind of behavior the curtain wall shows in the face of earthquakes and how they can be made safer gain more importance. In this study, the importance of choosing and elaborating the materials to be used in the components of a building envelope designed as a curtain wall, especially at the design stage, is mentioned. As a field study, it was investigated whether the words "earthquake/earthquake behavior" and "curtain wall" were present in the course content analysis conducted within the scope of universities in Turkey that provide architectural education and have building project/application project courses in their curriculum. In the curriculum reviews, the concepts of "curtain wall" and "earthquake/earthquake behavior" are rarely included in the application projects/construction projects that contain application details related to technical issues. However, the architect who makes the design should know the types and components of the curtain wall. In addition, it has to offer correct construction solutions, especially in application projects, knowing the behavior it will show against wind and earthquakes, which are dynamic loads. In conclusion; It has been seen that the architectural design decisions made in this respect are important in that the curtain wall systems, material and connection preferences can reduce the risk of vulnerability in terms of earthquake behavior. In order for these decisions to be earthquake resistant choices, the relation between curtain wall and earthquake should be included in architectural education implementation projects/building projects, and architects should be provided with adequate training on this subject by conducting studies and projects on the subject.

We congratulate Res. Asst. Mustafa Dallı and wish him success in his academic studies.
