Lavis technique held at faculty of fine arts

Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), has added another event to its efforts to encourage students to engage in artistic production. A workshop on the lavis technique, conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysun Cançat from the Department of Graphic Design, brought together students from different departments, creating an interdisciplinary artistic environment. Participants had the opportunity to explore expressive methods based on tonal differences, gain technical knowledge, and freely express their creativity.

Within the scope of its applied art activities, Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Fine Arts offered students yet another meaningful artistic experience. Led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysun Cançat from the Department of Graphic Design, the lavis workshop united students from various departments to collaborate in the process of creative production.
Throughout the workshop, participants were introduced to lavis, a classical painting technique. Lavis involves the use of fluid media such as ink or watercolor to create forms not with lines but with tonal gradients. By emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow, this technique allows artists to produce depth and atmosphere. Students were able to apply this knowledge practically and reflect their personal interpretations in their visual creations.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysun Cançat highlighted during the workshop that lavis is not only suitable for controlled compositions but also offers great potential for unique artistic expressions that emerge through accidental blotches. “This technique helps students enhance both their observational skills and intuitive abilities. Through the emotional power of tones, they develop their own visual language and often encounter unexpected outcomes during the creative process,” she noted.
The works produced at the end of the workshop revealed how students from diverse disciplines could come together and create a shared artistic space. The simplicity yet strength of the lavis technique contributed both to their technical development and to nurturing personal creativity.
As Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Fine Arts, we sincerely thank Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysun Cançat for her valuable contributions and for providing our students with such an inspiring artistic experience.
