Sustainability-Oriented Social Responsibility Projects from the Department of Visual Communication Design

Students of the Visual Communication Design Department at Istanbul Gelişim University, Faculty of Fine Arts, carried out impactful projects as part of the “Social Responsibility and Sustainability” course conducted under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Aslı Kasar. Within the scope of the course, students developed a wide range of creative and effective projects focused on environmental awareness, recycling, and local partnerships. These efforts were designed in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aimed to raise both individual and social consciousness.

Practical Education for Real Social Impact

The projects were supported through seven weeks of fieldwork and included stages such as reporting, presentations, prototyping, and communication with local stakeholders. Rather than remaining theoretical, students engaged directly with real-world issues to generate solutions through practice.

Highlighted Projects:

  • Transforming Plastic Bottles into Flower Pots
This project aimed to demonstrate how plastic waste can be recycled into functional products. By turning plastic bottles into flower pots, students not only promoted environmental awareness but also showcased creative reuse.
  • Waste Oil Collection Campaign
In collaboration with local authorities, students initiated a campaign to collect waste oil from both household and institutional kitchens, contributing to the recycling ecosystem. Field research, reporting, and informative activities were carried out during the project.
  • Environmental Awareness Education for Children
Students organized interactive educational sessions for primary school children, featuring animations and games related to environmental issues. At the end of the program, participants received a “Nature-Friendly Certificate” for their involvement.
  • Recycling Bins and Awareness Boards
Informational boards and recycling bins were designed and installed throughout the university campus to encourage waste separation and recycling behavior.
  • Plastic Cap Collection for Wheelchair Donation
Through collecting plastic bottle caps, students contributed to both recycling efforts and social responsibility initiatives by facilitating the donation of a wheelchair to an individual in need. The project involved awareness campaigns, informative posters, and coordination with official institutions for the donation process.

Transformation Through Education

Thanks to this course, students not only enhanced their design and visual communication skills but also gained experience in community engagement, project execution, reporting, and producing sustainable solutions.
Course instructor Asst. Prof. Dr. Aslı Kasar emphasized that the projects provided significant outcomes not only in terms of academic achievement but also in terms of social benefit and responsibility.
