Interior Architecture








 The Fifth of the "Interior Architecture Talks" was held with the theme of "Spatial Belonging and Housing" with the participation of Pınar Geçkili Kara


The fifth of the "Interior Architecture Talks" jointly organized by Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF) Department of Interior Architecture and Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, with the theme of "Spatial Belonging and Housing", with the participation of Pınar Geçkili Karaman, on Google Meet on January 9, 2021. It was held between 14:00 and 16:00.


 

Organized by Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Fine Arts Faculty (FAF) Interior Architecture Department and Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Departments, the "Interior Architecture Talks" event continues on digital platforms. This week's theme of Interior Architecture Talks, which was held online on Saturday, December 26, 2020, between 14.00-16.00, was determined as "Spatial Belonging and Housing".

The conversation took place with the intense contribution and participation of students and lecturers.

Department heads Asst. Prof. Dr. Zerrin Funda Uruk and Asst. Prof. Dr. Yaprak Özel,  Academics  Asst. Prof. Dr Pelin Aykut, Lect. Yusuf Taner Gültekin, Lect. Bulent Gunes, Lect.. Asiye Kübra Külünkoğlu, Res. Asst. Gökçe Uzgören, Res. Asst. Merve Karadaban, Res. Asst.Tuğçe Öztürk and Res. Asst. Eliz Mutlu and the students of the Department of Interior Architecture and Interior Architecture and Environmental Design attended the conversation. The interview, attended by a total of 46 students, started with Pınar Geçkili Kahraman summarizing her academic career. After graduating from ITU Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture in 2014, she completed ITU Architectural Design Master's Program in 2018 with her thesis titled "Examination of Zeyrek Housing Environment in the Context of Spatial Belonging and Alienation". She continued his presentation by explaining the concepts of alienation and belonging.

Pınar Geçkili Kahraman, after explaining the concepts of alienation and belonging, moved on to the bond between me and someone else, belonging to space and meaning. While describing the belonging to the place, Heidegger's “The place is not already there before the bridge exists (…) The bridge does not become a part of the place for the first time to be there, on the contrary, the place means existence through the bridge.” He emphasized the concept of place from the example of a bridge by quoting his statement. She also explained the phenomenon of place and identity, socio-spatial behaviors and belonging.

After the conceptual explanations, Pınar Geçkili Kahraman shared the details of the Zeyrek Study he made in the Zeyrek neighborhood in Fatih, Istanbul. She talked about the socio-demographic structure of Zeyrek Neighborhood and the spatial stratification in the neighborhood.

Then, with the contributions of our teachers and students who participated in the conversation, the situation of the neighborhood in the recent past and today was compared. Pınar Geçkili Kahraman took the situation in Zeyrek Neighborhood as an example and said, "While belonging to a place breaks alienation up to a certain point, it can trigger it after a point." made statements.

While the changing concepts of belonging in different districts of Istanbul were discussed in the questions and answers at the end of the presentation, a pleasant conversation took place with the contributions of our teachers and students on subjects such as belonging, gentrification and traditionalism through the examples of Kuzguncuk, Balat, Kurtuluş, Eminönü and Karaköy.

Head of Interior Architecture Department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yaprak Özel and Head of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department Asst. Prof. Dr. Zerrin Funda Ürük also thanked Pınar Geçkili Kahraman after the interview.
