“Future Skills” Course Launched for the First Time in Turkey at Istanbul Gelişim University Faculty of Fine Arts

Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts has broken new ground in Turkey by offering the “Future Skills” (ILT499) course for the first time at the university level. The elective course has been made available to all students of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Developed with reference to reports such as the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs and Deloitte’s 2024 Global Human Capital Trends, the Future Skills course was added to the curriculum under the Department of Visual Communication Design. Over a 14-week period, students will focus on the competencies required for the future. Each week covers a different skill, aiming to equip students with practical and theoretical knowledge. The weekly curriculum includes topics such as analytical thinking and innovation, curiosity and lifelong learning, complex problem solving, critical thinking and analysis, creative thinking, leadership and social influence, technology literacy, networks and cybersecurity, stress management, artificial intelligence and big data, environmental responsibility, and talent management. The course is designed to help students gain both theoretical insights and hands-on experience.

The course, taught by Dr. Aslı Kasar, will be held on Thursdays at 14:00 and is expected to attract high participation. Dr. Kasar summarized the aim of the course as follows: “We want our students to prepare not only for the professions of the future but also for the skills of the future. Acquiring future skills is just as important as having a profession. To secure a stronger position in professional life, it is essential to prepare our students not only in terms of knowledge but also in terms of skills. Individuals equipped with up-to-date competencies are more likely to succeed in the sector and gain a competitive edge. That is why it is important to keep track of current developments and integrate skill-oriented courses into the curriculum. As the Department of Visual Communication Design, we have embraced this vision and introduced the course Future Skills into our curriculum for the first time in Turkey. In doing so, we have taken another step towards strengthening the ties between academia and the industry.”
