Istanbul Gelişim University’s Office of the Dean of Students has added a new event to its series aimed at expanding students' artistic visions and strengthening their creative skills. Led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Kuş, a faculty member of the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Graphic Design (GRA), the “Artistic Perspective Workshop” was held with intense participation from students across various disciplines.
Perspective: The Grammar of Art and the Illusion of Depth
During the workshop, artistic perspective was treated as a technique for creating an "illusion of depth" that mimics how the human eye perceives the world. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Kuş emphasized that perspective is not merely a mathematical rule, but a method of conveying the volume, depth, and relative distance of objects onto a two-dimensional plane. Throughout the session, participants gained theoretical knowledge ranging from the historical evolution of perspective to technical types such as linear, atmospheric, and color perspective.
The event continued with interactive presentations and practical exercises following the theoretical lectures. Using various materials such as charcoal, watercolor, and acrylic, participants practiced creating depth perception, modeling, and composition. Under the individual guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Kuş, students moved beyond classical methods, producing original works using techniques like bird's-eye, worm's-eye, and fisheye views.
At the end of the event, participants expressed that they had undergone a process that transformed their way of understanding space and reality. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Kuş stated that artistic perspective grants students the power to transform data into visuals and imagination into reality, noting that good design does not just look beautiful, but also acts as a "whisper" that guides and clarifies.
The Office of the Dean of Students announced that it will continue to organize similar workshops to contribute to the personal and academic development of students in the upcoming semester.
