Documentary production processes and stages of filmmaking

The program was moderated by Erkan Çiçek. As part of the event, the documentary film Ada Kokusu (Scent of the Island), directed by Ahmet Bikiç, was screened. Following the screening, the discussion session addressed the production stages of documentary cinema from multiple perspectives, and students’ questions regarding the process were answered in detail.

Throughout the talk, the fundamental building blocks of documentary film production were emphasized. The production chain was explained comprehensively, ranging from the emergence of a documentary idea and field research processes to subject selection, narrative development, and pre-production planning stages.

Editing, post-production, and narrative structure

During the discussion, detailed attention was given to the methods used in establishing narrative rhythm, visual coherence, and story flow during the editing and post-production stages. It was stated that documentary cinema is not merely a process of recording reality, but also a practice of constructing a compelling narrative.

It was emphasized that elements such as the selection of visual materials, transitions between scenes, and the construction of the emotional structure of the story directly determine the impact of a documentary film.

Festival processes and visibility strategies

The event also addressed the journey of documentary films through national and international film festivals. Information was shared regarding festival application processes, curation criteria, distribution strategies, and methods for increasing the visibility of independent productions.

In this context, the importance of strategic planning and accurate festival targeting was highlighted as essential for young filmmakers seeking to reach wider audiences with their productions.
