Visual Communication Design

The Second Phase of the “Sustainability Awareness on Campus” Project Has Been Completed

The second phase of the “Sustainability Awareness on Campus” BAP project, conducted within the Faculty of Fine Arts at Istanbul Gelisim University, has been successfully completed. This phase of the project was implemented through an applied design workshop held on March 3, 2026, at 14:00.

Within the scope of the project, which aims to increase sustainability awareness across the campus, students examined global and national waste data and transformed these statistics into striking poster designs conveying powerful visual messages. During the workshop, students focused on interpreting statistical data that reveal the scale of the environmental crisis through the language of graphic design, producing designs intended to raise awareness.

The project is led by Res. Asst. Dr. Ayten Bengisu Cansever Bayhan, with Res. Asst. Mustafa Dallı and Res. Asst. Okan Kırbacı serving as researchers. In this second phase, students analyzed waste measurement data collected on campus alongside environmental statistics reported at both global and national levels. Based on these data, the designs produced during the workshop employed data visualization, typographic emphasis, and metaphorical imagery to communicate environmental issues in a compelling visual form.

The data examined in the workshop highlight the magnitude of the global waste crisis. Worldwide municipal solid waste generation has reached approximately 2.24 billion tons annually, and this figure is expected to increase by nearly 70%, reaching 3.40 billion tons by 2050. In addition, approximately 11 million tons of plastic enter the oceans each year, while the global plastic recycling rate remains at only 9–10%. These statistics formed the conceptual foundation of the posters designed by the students.

Throughout the workshop, students not only engaged in a creative design process but also experienced how data-driven design approaches can be used to communicate sustainability issues effectively. The workshop demonstrated that design is not merely an aesthetic practice but also a powerful communication tool capable of fostering social awareness and environmental responsibility.
In the next stages of the project, the posters and visual works produced by the students are planned to be exhibited on campus and shared through digital platforms. Through these outputs, the project aims to contribute to increasing awareness of sustainable living practices within the university community.

The “Sustainability Awareness on Campus” BAP project stands out as an important academic initiative that places data-based design production and student participation at its core, aiming to develop creative and interdisciplinary responses to environmental challenges.
