Orientation program held for first-year students of the visual communication design department for the 2026–2027 academic year!
The Department of Visual Communication Design at Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), organized an orientation program for first-year students who joined the department in the 2026–2027 academic year. The program was designed to support students’ adaptation to university and departmental life and provided them with information about academic processes, the department’s educational structure, course content, and various aspects of university life.
New students introduced to the department
During the orientation program, students were informed about the educational approach of the Department of Visual Communication Design and the general structure of the undergraduate program. Information was provided about course procedures, practice-based education, and design projects carried out within the department to help students pursue their four-year education in a more informed and planned manner.
The interdisciplinary structure of the Visual Communication Design field was also highlighted. Students were introduced to various areas of creative production, including graphic design, typography, illustration, photography, video, animation, digital media, and interactive design. In this way, the program aimed to help students become familiar with the different areas of design they will encounter throughout their education and to explore their own areas of interest.
Information on academic processes shared with students
The orientation program also included information intended to facilitate students’ academic lives. Students were informed about course registration and attendance procedures, the way courses are conducted, attendance requirements, assessment and evaluation processes, academic advising, and university resources available to students.
In addition, the communication processes between students and academic staff, as well as the information and support mechanisms they may need throughout their academic journey, were addressed. Students’ questions regarding academic procedures were answered, and practical guidance was provided to help them navigate their first semester of university life.
Supporting students’ adaptation to departmental life
The orientation program aimed not only to provide students with information about academic processes but also to familiarize them with the educational and creative culture of the Department of Visual Communication Design. Emphasis was placed on the fact that design education encompasses research, creativity, practice, and critical thinking, while the importance of maintaining an active and productive learning process throughout their education was highlighted.
The program also provided an opportunity for newly enrolled students to meet one another and interact with the department’s academic staff. The orientation continued with a question-and-answer session and an exchange of information, allowing students to directly ask the academic staff about matters related to the department’s academic structure, course processes, and university life.
