Lecturer Ahmet Bikiç Discussed the Relationship Between Artificial Intelligence and Cinema at an International Congress

Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Visual Communication Design Lecturer Ahmet Bikiç delivered a paper presentation at the I. Sineakademi International Cinema and Media Studies Congress held in Diyarbakır. His presentation, titled “A New Paradigm in Cinema: The Rise of AI-Supported Narration,” became one of the highlights of the academic sessions.

A New Platform for Cinema and Media Studies

The congress, hosted by Dicle University and co-organized with Istanbul Gelişim University between September 3–5, 2025, brought together international academics, researchers, artists, and students. For three days, the event fostered discussions on contemporary issues in cinema, media, and communication.

More than 40 papers were presented by academics from various universities, paving the way for interdisciplinary debates and new ideas. Artificial intelligence, digital platforms, the transformation of cinematic narratives, media aesthetics, independent film production, and the relationship between academia and the industry stood out as the central themes.

“A New Paradigm in Cinema” Attracted Great Interest

In his paper, IGU Lecturer Ahmet Bikiç examined artificial intelligence not merely as a technical innovation but as a creative force reshaping cinematic narration. He illustrated how AI-powered algorithms are increasingly integrated into different stages of filmmaking—from scriptwriting and scene planning to visual effects and editing.

Bikiç also shared recent examples of how AI is transforming audience experiences, emphasizing that even recommendation algorithms used by platforms like Netflix reshape viewing habits and expectations.

Interactive Exchange with Participants

Following the presentation, the Q&A session sparked questions around the ethical dimensions of AI-driven production, its impact on creative originality, and the future role of human involvement in cinema. Bikiç argued that artificial intelligence should not be seen as a threat to artistic creativity but as an opportunity for new modes of expression, while also stressing the necessity of developing ethical oversight mechanisms.

Highlighting IGU’s Academic Contribution

The Sineakademi Congress showcased IGU’s contribution to academic knowledge production. Bikiç’s paper stood out with its theoretical depth and up-to-date examples, and participants highlighted its significance in pointing to “AI aesthetics” as an emerging field of research in cinema studies.

Looking Ahead to 2026

In the closing session, organizers emphasized that the congress had successfully taken its first step toward becoming a permanent international academic platform in the field of cinema and media. The organizing committee announced that the next congress would be held in 2026 with an even broader scope.

As Istanbul Gelişim University Faculty of Fine Arts, we congratulate Lecturer Ahmet Bikiç for his valuable contribution at the international level and wish him continued success in his academic endeavors.
