Directed by Lecturer Ahmet Bikiç, the documentary centers on the life story of Şule and Aziz Bengi, a couple who left Istanbul 15 years ago to settle in Gökçeada. The film deepens around themes of a desire to reconnect with nature, the responsibilities that come with a sustainable lifestyle, and the pursuit of freedom, inviting viewers on a transformative journey from urban to rural life.
The documentary not only portrays a change in lifestyle but also makes visible the intellectual and emotional processes behind this transformation. The challenges of leaving behind the comfort zone of city life, the effort to establish a life in harmony with nature, and the transformation brought by a production-oriented way of living are conveyed through a simple yet compelling narrative.
Accompanied by olive trees, the scent of thyme, and the island wind, “Ada Kokusu” presents a visual poetic narrative about simplicity, productivity, and attunement to the rhythm of nature. While addressing themes of sustainability, environmental awareness, and inner transformation through a strong cinematic language, the documentary draws attention to the modern individual’s need to reconnect with nature.
The international premiere at the Golden FEMI Film Festival is expected to contribute to the documentary’s engagement with audiences from different geographies and to expand the reach of its universal themes. Being selected for the festival is significant not only in increasing the film’s visibility on an international platform but also in strengthening interest in independent documentary production.
“Ada Kokusu” is not merely a story of escape; it is also an invitation to reflect on a journey of returning to oneself. By opening up a space to reconsider the human–nature relationship, the documentary offers a narrative that encourages viewers to question their own ways of living.
The documentary, realized with the support of Istanbul Gelisim University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Visual Communication Design, and the Directorate of Public Relations and Promotion, features Şule and Aziz Bengi in the leading roles. Supported through academic and institutional collaboration, the production aims to make a meaningful contribution both to artistic practice and to raising social awareness.
