 Understanding Violence in the Cyber Violence Arena

Asst. Prof. Dr. Rabiya Saltik presented her statement titled "Body Humiliation in the Arena of Cyber ​​Violence" at the 4th International Congress on Understanding Violence, held on 7-9 October 2022 with the theme of "Adolescents and Violence". She examined attitudes such as bodily humiliation, which she considered as a type of psychological violence, and criticizing his own body by comparing it with someone else's body, through the frequency of its occurrence in cyberspace. Choosing an Instagram account that asks users for comments by sharing before and after photos of famous people as the research universe, Saltik created the sample with the contents of the three posts that received the most likes and comments in the last five days as of August 31th, 2022. In the sample group between the relevant dates, a total of 294 data were collected and the data set was completed, and neither qualitative nor quantitative content analysis method was used. In the study, research data were analyzed using SPSS in order to depict the intensity of psychological violence and body humiliation in social media. As a result of the analysis, Saltik has reached the conclusion that the user-centered structure of social media creates an environment for body humiliation, which is a type of psychological violence; he found that body humiliation usually takes place in the form of remote criticism. She shared her comments on what can be done to prevent body humiliation in her presentation.

Contribution to the Field to Prevent Violence

Stating that violence is among the most important problems of the age, Saltik stated that the way to see the position of different types of violence in daily life is to conduct studies in interdisciplinary fields. Seeking an answer to the question of how violence can be prevented with his work, Saltik said, “The work carried out deals with the increasing phenomenon of psychological violence through digital networks as an important topic. I hope it will contribute to the literature and shed light on existing problems.” she concluded her speech.
