Musa Can Servi graduated from Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Fine Arts Faculty (FAF) Radio, Television and Cinema department last year. He completed the shooting of the short film project Borçlu, for which he received production and post-production support at the 16th Cinema of the Future, organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cinema and TÜRSAK. Musa Can Servi, who is currently active in the sector and works as a camera assistant, commented on the process after he started working in the sector and the contribution of his education at the university to this process.
- The cinema and television industry is a sector in which you can take part by working directly in the sector without getting an education in this field. In this sense, there is a dichotomy in the sector between people who have received education and those who have not. Do you think that the cinema and television education you received has a sectoral impact?
The education I received at the university was very useful, especially in the theoretical sense. We had less space to practice compared to the sets. We can reinforce the knowledge we have gained in applied courses by experiencing them in the sector. Since our lessons generally included conversations, criticism and analysis on cinema, we were able to learn a lot during those conversations. I can say that the cinema and television education I received at the university made a great profit while chatting with people who have been in the industry for years. If you have received training in this field, you have created a background before entering the sector. You often benefit from this background, which is strong in theory, in the sector.
- Do you have any suggestions for current students?
I can say that they do not wait to graduate to enter the industry. While they are studying at the university, practicing the training they received on the sets will carry them forward. This will open up great differences between them and many others in the industry. Since it will be very difficult to work in the sector while the education life continues, I recommend them to take their summer holidays. Learning by working actively on set is a whole other experience. I advise them to make close friendships at university and have as much fun as possible.
We would like to thank our graduate student Musa Can Servi.
