 Digital Photography: Interview with Photographer Sevgi Can on Backstage Photography in the Cinema and Television Industry


Within the scope of the Design Festival organized within the scope of Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF), an interview titled Digital Photography: Backstage Photography in the Cinema and Television Sector was held with photographer Sevgi Can.


Organized every year at Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF), the Design Festival, which sets off with the theme of digitalism this year, held seminars and workshops where technologies, innovations, and expectations developing and transforming in different disciplines along with digitalization were discussed and discussed.
 
Interview titled Digital Photography: Backstage Photography in Cinema and Television, prepared with the contribution of the Radio, Television and Cinema department. It was moderated by lecturer Kerem Yükseloğlu and Res. Asst. Eda Çekemci, with the participation of photographer Sevgi Can.
 
Starting the conversation by explaining how she started photography and why she turned to backstage photography, Sevgi Can stated that she also does product photography, but her favorite field is backstage photography. Continuing her words by stating that the backstage photographer is the person who views a movie, TV series, commercial, clip set and documents how these productions take place, Sevgi Can stated that they took both photographs and videos on the set and took part in both production and post-production processes. She emphasized that a backstage photographer should be alert and careful in an overactive and sometimes tense environment such as a set.
 
On the question of what the technology developing from analog to digital in the field of photography brings and what it can bring in the future, she talked about the effect of digitalization on the understanding of photography and technical equipment. Emphasizing that the artist creates a narrative in photography, he said that no matter how advanced technology advances, a photographer will definitely be needed to avoid an artificial, emotionless photograph, and that he thinks that developing technologies will only provide technical conveniences.
 
She gave information about how a photographer should prepare his portfolio and how social media should be used. The interview, which had a strong participation, ended with the answers to the questions from the participants.
