The book review of Radio, Television, and Cinema Department Research Assistant Eda Çekemci was published in the refereed journal Art/icle Art and Design Journal published within the body of Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF). "The Cinema of Science: How Postmodern Science Changed Science Fiction" by Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Doğan, one of the academicians of the department. Çekemci, who wrote the review of the book titled, evaluated the place of the book in the literature.
Çekemci analyzed the book Science of Cinema, based on the doctoral thesis published by Doruk Publishing, by the author Emre Doğan, which was accepted as The Metamorphosis of Scientific Knowledge in the Postmodern Era and American Science Fiction Cinema in 2021, by dividing it into sections. The book, which consists of three main parts, and each main part is divided into sub-titles in itself, has been considered the output of long-term research.
Arguing that the author Emre Doğan, who preferred to present the comprehensive content of the book in a fluent language, left the reader with the feeling of being on an exploration of scientific knowledge and science fiction, Çekemci emphasized that the study fills an important gap in the literature.
A Snippet from the Review
“The fact that language is fragmented in its structure and that philosophy is subjective and transitive in its structure causes many concepts discussed in the book to not have a clear, single, and direct equivalent. In this sense, the Cinema of Science has a structure that risks being messy as it contains concepts that cannot be explained with a single and fixed definition such as modern, postmodern, modernism, postmodernism, modernity, postmodernity, science, being scientific, and science fiction. In this sense, the cinema of Science provides the opportunity to reach the right information first hand for those who do not know the concepts, and to turn to the right information for the readers who have known falsehoods about the concepts, eliminating the risk of clutter by conveying the concepts on an understandable basis as much as possible (…) Modern-modernism-modernity and postmodern The Cinema of Science, which carefully presents the distinctions and relations between the concepts, among many false sources where the concepts of postmodernism and postmodernity are used interchangeably and science is almost synonymous with technology, is an important step in filling the gap in the culture of science.
We congratulate Res. Asst. Eda Çekemci for her work and wish her continued success.
