Asst. Prof. Dr. Rabiya Saltik's article titled "Digital Space of Immigrant Memory: Diasporatürk", prepared together with Dr. Fatma Esra Öztürk, was published in the October issue of the International Journal of Media and Communication Research.
In the study, which states that photography is a tool that keeps memories alive and therefore becomes the subject of memory directly, the feeling of nostalgia in the relationship between photography and memory is discussed.
“Looking at a nostalgic photo is emotionally equivalent to going on a journey in time. A nostalgic photo frame has meaning beyond being a concrete material for individuals by presenting the magic and sincerity of the moment. "Beyond being just images, photographs are spiritual values that contain deep meaning and memories and tell many things to a person." The relationship between photography and memory, discussed as follows, is conveyed with an emphasis on the nostalgic photographic experience. The relationship in question is limited to the sharing of nostalgic photographs by the account called DiasporaTürk on Twitter. “Is the DiasporaTürk account, where photos from the past are shared, effective in building social memory?” Based on the research question, the study aimed to reveal the relationship between nostalgia and memory in new media. In the study, the Twitter account called DiasporaTürk was examined and the photos shared on this platform were analyzed with a semiotic method. The photographs selected on the platform, which include the shares and stories of people migrating from Turkey to Europe, were evaluated from the perspective of nostalgia and memory. As a result of the study, it was found that the account named DiasporaTürk functions as a digital memory place that allows memory transfer through shared photographs and creates a digital archive regarding migration.
We congratulate Asst. Prof. Dr. Rabiya Saltik and wish her continued success.
