 Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Doğan and Res. Asst. Okan Kırbacı Made a Paper Presentation at the 3rd International Cinema and Youth Congress!

Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF) Radio, Television and Cinema Department Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Doğan and Res. Asst. Okan Kırbacı delivered a paper titled "The Advocacy of Modernity and the Enemy of Postmodernity in Christopher Nolan's Science Fiction Films: An Example of Tenet" at the third International Cinema and Youth Congress (ICAY) held by Anadolu University on 11-12 November 2021.

In the congress with the special theme of “Cinema and Dystopia”, in the session chaired by Gülçin Salma, in the presentation made by Okan Kırbacı, the filmography of Christopher Nolan, the director of Tenet, which constitutes the sample of the paper, and the general style in his films were mentioned. In Nolan's films, a male protagonist, who has psychological problems, struggles with himself and those around him; Although he is a modernist director, he also benefited from the postmodernist style in his films; It was stated that he had a scientific, not fantastic, science-fiction understanding.

After the introduction part of the presentation, the concepts of modernity and postmodernity that form the conceptual framework, the differences between the concepts were mentioned and their projections in Christopher Nolan's cinema were given. As mentioned in the notice:

Science, which is an important value of modernity, is defended in the film Interstellar, and the belief that in the universe of the film lies the belief that the negative situation will be overcome under the leadership of science, in The Dark Knight, while the nation-state and order, which is a modern value, are preserved, the anarchy represented by the Joker character is prosecuted and capitalism, private property, etc. are prosecuted. that the concepts are preserved;

It was stated that he also benefited from a similar formula in the movie Tenet. In the context of the conceptual framework in Tenet:

The fact that the name of the protagonist, the CIA agent/Tenet employee played by John David Washington, is unknown and that he calls himself The Protagonist (i.e. the protagonist) is a projection of the grand narrative aspect of modernity,

The protagonist (The Protagonist) works to save humanity and the world, to protect the order and the interests of nation states, and his action is a modernist movement, just like in other Nolan films,

While the character of The Protagonist saves the world, getting help from the character of Neil (Robert Pattison), a CIA agent with a master's in physics, is a projection of the scientistic side of modernity,

The fact that The Protagonist character is a black character based on the pluralism claim of postmodernity and that this is the projection of Nolan's use of postmodern style despite being a modernist director, but that The Protagonist behaves just like a white person, even though he is a black character,

The character of Andrei Sator (Kenneth Branagh), the enemy of The Protagonist, points to a postmodern output; It has been emphasized that he is in a hedonist, individualist, postmodern schizophrenic situation who does not care about the future of the world and is made hostile.

We congratulate Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Doğan and Res. Asst. Okan Kırbacı for their work and wish them continued success.
