An Interview wLecturer Yağız Yakin About His Career and the Effects of the Pandemic on Interior Design

A short interview was held with Yağız Yakin from Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Fine Arts Faculty (FAF) Interior Architecture and Interior Architecture and Environmental Design departments about his career and the effects of the pandemic on space design.

If we can get to know you briefly, can you talk about your career process in academia and the sector?

I am Yağız Yakin, and I have been active in the sector for 16 years. I own a design office that implements many domestic and international architectural and interior design projects. I have completed 13 years in the education sector and entered my 8th year in the university. After my student years, I continued my professional life, which I started as an intern in the offices of valuable architects of Turkey, by establishing my own office in 2007. As a result of my studies with the academic community and my teachers and my higher education, I started to transfer my experiences to the university environment.

• What were the factors that influenced you while making your career planning in this way?

My passion and zeal for the art of architecture enabled me to learn more with each passing day and then to reach the desire to transfer my knowledge.

• If we talk about space design, in a very general way, how do you think the spaces will be shaped after the pandemic?

Unfortunately, human beings are known for quickly forgetting the disasters they have experienced and returning to their normal lives quickly after they find comfort. I do not think that the pandemic will affect the design of the space, except for cleanliness and distance. I think that the mechanical systems that technically equip the art of space arrangement will develop, and the quality of breathing air and ambient living will be changed. I can say that we have entered a period in which people will become conscious and live more carefully rather than in places.

• What do you think will be the main determinants of design in a world where social distance is necessary, where we cannot use public spaces as before, in this period we live in?

Most of the epidemic diseases are transmitted by particles, good filtering of them and taking precautions to keep the places clean and mitigate the damage will ensure success. It is obvious that we have entered a period where space design will be handled with even more sustainable methods and innovative and technological materials will be designed more than enough. After this period, sustainable spaces and design will be the main determinant.

• It has been understood that it is possible to work remotely even though it is a necessity during the pandemic process, what are your positive/negative opinions about this online education process that you also maintain remotely?

Working remotely is as difficult a practice as it is possible. We are people who work with individuals, exchange ideas and produce. I think we will get through the process with success, even if we have some difficulties.

Thank you very much for your contribution, sir.
