Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Gökçe Uzgören's Howard S. Becker's "The Subtleties of the Profession: How to Conduct Research in Social Sciences?" The book review he wrote about his book was published in the first issue of ART/icle: Art and Design Journal, which has the status of an international scientific refereed journal published by Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF).
The first issue of the journal, which is planned to be published twice a year in June and December by Istanbul Gelişim University Faculty of Fine Arts and aims to create a common academic platform from different disciplines in the fields of fine arts and design, was published in June. In the first issue of the journal, which includes four research articles and three review articles, there is also a book review. The book review, written by Gökçe Uzgören, is based on an analysis of Howard S. Becker's analysis of the "subtleties" to be considered while conducting a research in his book.
Gökçe Uzgören shared her thoughts on the book review published in the journal as follows:
“A large part of the book consists of the recordings of Howard S. Becker, a sociologist working especially in the field of art and music sociology, while witnessing the problems that his students encountered during his teaching experience, and the solutions and methods that can be developed for these problems. This book by Becker makes us confront the fact that the biggest obstacles we face when doing research within the scope of social sciences are about intellectual methods rather than methods applied in practice. If we come to the content of the book, the work; It consists of five parts, namely “The Subtleties”, “Imaginations”, “Sample”, “Concepts” and “Logic”. The main thing that Becker's book adds to the reader is that it gives some clues through concrete examples on what can be done in thought and practice to expand the field of thought and to become conscious of the diversity in the world. And of course, being content with reading these subtleties also mentioned by Becker will not help our studies. These subtleties will only become meaningful when we learn how to use them. This means not only using these subtleties as an analytical method in scientific studies, but also making them a routine in our daily life, that is, applying them in practice.”
We congratulate Gökçe Uzgören and wish her continued success.
