Bülent Erkmen is “remixing” his design production spanning 40 years!
Design is first and foremost the art of building a structure. Regardless of its material, place and function, the design structure should always remain functional between the expected (order) and the medium (person, persons, mass) to which it is directed. Design is essentially an uninterrupted practice of translation, whether it sends concrete signs through a language construct, circulates or causes the sharing of abstract associations.
Bülent Erkmen, one of Turkey's leading designers, brings together the exhibition titled "Remix", which he will open at Akbank Sanat, from the late 1970s. In addition to the works produced in all areas of graphic design (books, magazines, posters, logos…), exhibition space, exhibition designs and works in the field of theater, three-dimensional object designs such as scarves, shirts, jewelry, tiles, carpets and special projects, it is a company that opens up to many directions. We have a production factory in front of us. Considering the more than 400 works in the exhibition, it is possible to see Erkmen as a director who puts Turkey's social and cultural production on the stage with the language of design rather than a designer.
In this exhibition, Erkmen shuffles and redistributes the bundle in his hand. It “remixes” a creation and production process spanning 40 years. The labyrinth-associated setup of the exhibition, its closure to the outside, so that the audience can get lost among the works while visiting the exhibition, disorientate themselves, so that they can determine their own routes. Being lost in Erkmen's works means being on the brink of an unexpected discovery, an invention.
As part of Bülent Erkmen's REMIX exhibition, Akbank Sanat is hosting a seven-series talk series focusing on remix aesthetics in different art disciplines. Click for details of the talk series.
