 "Upcycling Workshop: Sustainable Products Transformed from Waste Bottles" Social Responsibility Project Second Stage Completed!

Organised by Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF), Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design and Communication and Design, "Upcycling Workshop: Sustainable Products Transformed from Waste Bottles" social responsibility project was held on Tuesday, 5 December 2023 with Beycam Workshop visit & Beykoz Glass and Billur Museum technical trip.
"Upcycling Workshop: Sustainable Products Transformed from Waste Bottles" social responsibility project was designed with the theme of "Touching Glass" as a movement that tries to ensure that sustainability is better understood by students. Res. Asst Gökçe Uzgören, Res. Asst. Merve Karadaban and Res. Asst. Büşra Kılıç, Beycam Workshop visit & Beykoz Glass and Billur Museum technical trip were planned for the second leg of the project consisting of three stages. The visit, which was attended by a total of 8 students from the Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design and Communication and Design, took place on Tuesday, 5 December 2023, between 11:00-12:00. Beycam Workshop, which was established in Istanbul in 2019 by experienced glass masters with 50 years of experience, is a boutique glass workshop that mainly produces on the art of cold glass shaping. 
 
During this visit, Beycam's experienced craftsmen Mehmet Yavuz and Süleyman Yıldız demonstrated some of the techniques they apply to glass. Apart from the application, theoretical explanations on (i) free and mold blowing, (ii) cutting, carving, processing, (iii) sandblasting, abrasion, (iv) drilling, expanding, (v) gluing, joining, and (vi) polishing stages were carried out.

Mehmet Yavuz, who stated that they act with the mission of quality materials, good design, craftsmanship, and sustainability, also showed the students around the Beycam Showroom, where their products, which are exhibited and sold in many different cities and countries, include vases, bowls, beverage sets and lighting products that are works of art. 
 
With the technical visit to the museum, it was aimed at the students to follow the development stages of Turkish glass art. In addition to Turkish glass, the collection of Beykoz Glass and Billur Museum also includes unique artifacts produced in Europe for the Ottoman palaces. The museum, where 1,480 pieces of outstanding examples of glass art are exhibited, consists of 12 thematic sections. 
 
The most important contribution of the project is to inform students about the transformation of waste and to encourage them to have a vision of the subject.
