The event “Future Shock I: James Cameron ve Bilimkurgunun Felsefesi”, featuring Asst. Prof. Emre Doğan, Chair of the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema, was successfully held at Atlas Cinema. The event received considerable interest as Dr. Doğan opened a critical discussion on the philosophical perspective James Cameron brings to science fiction cinema.
Held as part of the “The Art of James Cameron” exhibition at the Atlas Cinema Museum, the program began with Dr. Doğan addressing the place and philosophical function of science fiction in cinema. He then provided a brief overview of James Cameron’s cinematic vision, sharing with participants the fundamental philosophical questions embedded in science fiction and the broader framework of science philosophy. Expanding the discussion toward human–machine boundaries, artificial intelligence ethics and responsibility, Asst. Prof. Doğan analyzed The Terminator as a case study through key questions raised by science fiction and the philosophy of science. After expressing his thoughts on Skynet and the rise of technology, he engaged the audience with the central question, “Fate or choice?”, leading to a discussion on determinism. Dr. Doğan encouraged participants to reflect on questions such as what knowledge is and how its limits are defined. Concluding the event with insights on post-apocalyptic future imaginaries, Asst. Prof. Doğan also listened to participants’ feedback and answered their questions.
Asst. Prof. Emre Doğan thanked all attendees for their interest and brought the event to a close.
