Res. Asst. Dr. Eda Türkay, a faculty member of the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema, presented her paper titled “Yeni Çağın Eğlence Kültürüne Ayak Uyduramayanlar: Kapanan Platform Örnekleri” at the 4th International Film Studies Symposium.
In her presentation, Türkay examined rapidly developing digital streaming platforms within the new media landscape and emphasized that these platforms operate in a highly competitive environment, both globally and nationally, shaped by diverse content strategies. Highlighting that some platforms manage to reach broad audiences and maintain their presence while others shut down shortly after their launch, Türkay identified the core research question of the study as: “Why do some digital streaming platforms achieve long-term success while others fail in a short period of time?” The study adopts Organizational Ecology Theory as its theoretical framework, analyzing the life cycles of platforms through concepts such as founding, density dependence, niche, and mortality. Yahoo Screen (global) and Star Dijital and Cine+ (Turkey) were selected as sample cases. The research is based on internet-based archival screening and conducted through document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. The aim of the study is to interpret failed digital platform examples within the framework of Organizational Ecology Theory and contribute to discussions on sustainability and competitive dynamics in the digital media ecosystem. In doing so, it seeks to reveal the key factors that lead digital platforms to failure.
We congratulate Res. Asst. Dr. Eda Türkay for her valuable contribution.
