Res. Asst. Dr. Eda Türkay has contributed to the book Walter Benjamin’in Pasajlarında Gezintiler, edited by Prof. Dr. Serpil Kırel, with her chapter titled “Demir Konstrüksiyonlardan Ütopyalara: Pasajların Bağlayıcı Etkisi”.
Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project, considered one of the fundamental sources for understanding modernity, draws attention not only for its complex writing process but also for the continuing relevance of the intellectual paths it explores. The multi-layered transformations of the 19th century—particularly the debates on regimes of seeing, being seen, and displaying—continue to illuminate contemporary urban experiences. The arcades Benjamin examines in his literary, fragmentary text stand out as unique structures that whisper the “secrets, words, and sounds” of everyday life with their architectural and cultural presence.
Inspired by this rich intellectual legacy, the new edited volume Strolls in Walter Benjamin’s Arcades reconsiders Benjamin’s modernization discussions at the intersection of various disciplines. Edited by Prof. Dr. Serpil Kırel, the book invites readers on an interdisciplinary journey through concepts and experiences such as modernization, the arcades of Paris and Beyoğlu, heterotopia, Fourier’s utopias, Haussmann’s interventions in Paris, barricades, Edgar Allan Poe’s detective narratives, Baudelaire’s allegories, nightlife, and urban streets.
In her chapter titled “Demir Konstrüksiyonlardan Ütopyalara: Pasajların Bağlayıcı Etkisi”, Res Asst. Dr. Eda Türkay examines how arcades assume a connective role in modern urban life both architecturally and conceptually, offering a fresh contribution to the inquiries sparked by Benjamin’s ideas.
We congratulate Res. Asst. Dr. Eda Türkay on this achievement.
