An Interview with Prof. Dr. Şükran Güzin Ilıcak Aydınalp About His Academic Life Was Held

Dean of Istanbul Gelişim University Faculty of Fine Arts Prof. Dr. Şükran Güzin Ilıcak Aydınalp answered our questions about her academic life, the process of starting her duty as the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and the pandemic.

Dear Professor,

Let's start with your success story... Let's get to know you briefly and when and how did you decide to become an academic?

- I graduated from Eskişehir Anatolian High School in 1995 and I won the Faculty of Communication at Istanbul University that year. After graduating in 1999, my professor, Prof. Dr. Nükhet Güz, the Dean of Istanbul University, said, “Come, start as a research assistant immediately”, and I had the chance to work in the Arena Program, the very popular news program of that time, and frankly, I was very curious about the television world and started working there. . Of course, it was a very busy and very demanding job, there was no day and night and it was very stressful… That's why I both worked during this period and did a master's degree in Marketing and Logistics Management at Galatasaray University. Frankly, on the day I got my diploma, my ex-dean had transferred to Kültür University, I immediately went to him and luckily, they were posting a research assistant position that day, so I immediately applied and started working as a research assistant at the Department of Communication Arts, Faculty of Arts and Design at Kültür University. During this period, I completed my second master's degree at this university. I received the title of doctor from Marmara University Public Relations and Publicity Department in 2010, and the title of associate professor in the field of public relations in 2015, and in October of this year I was awarded the right to become a professor. I have prepared books on “crisis communication” and attended various conferences related to my field in America, Italy, France and Cyprus... Since 2015, Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences Public Relations and Publicity I continue to work as the Head of the Department of the Department of Gender Studies and also served as the Director of the Center for Gender Studies Practices and Research. Finally, the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts was recently notified to me…

“When I say my success story, actually my biggest chance was that I had the chance to work with the best teachers in my field”

What are the turning points in your successful life story?

- When it comes to my success story, my biggest chance was that I had the chance to work with the best teachers in my field. Prof. Dr. Nükhet Güz was an incredible intellectual woman. I learned from him the necessity of being versatile. My doctoral thesis teacher was Prof. Dr. Filiz Balta Peltekoğlu. In short, they taught me to be successful, and of course, it was a great chance to be in a field that I love. On the other hand, I never compromised on my beloved friends, hobbies and family during this process. In short, I tried to keep them all in balance… Prof. Dr. Filiz Balta Peltekoğlu made my work easier in this balance…

“All the dean professors who have served so far have contributed to the development of this faculty. And I will try my best to have a faculty with more "visible".

What are your goals for your new job, what are the projects you want to accomplish?

- Luckily, I started working in a faculty once like a family. Responsible academics who help each other and don't run away from work make my job easier. All dean professors who have served so far have contributed to the development of this faculty. I will try my best to have a faculty with more "visibility". In addition, I plan to make an effort to influence our external stakeholders more through social responsibility projects and events.

As a social scientist, what kind of an idea did you first get offered to be the director of a faculty where artist academicians are dominant?

- Frankly, when my rector told me about this for the first time, I was in a small shock because it was a huge responsibility… My first thought was that I hope I would do good deeds and I wouldn't get caught up in the magic of administration. I was constantly saying to myself, “May God not be embarrassing”, because I was also aware that the burden of duty would increase. Of course, administrative duties are actually “trust” duties, so one should not lose his compass. On the other hand, it is a structure that I actually know because I worked at the Faculty of Art and Design until my associate professorship. Also, since I'm already an art lover, frankly, I am very excited and very happy to be here. Because it's a field that I love and am interested in, so it's a big chance for me.

The pandemic process has led to radical changes in many sectors. In this sense, how do you see the future of the education and training sector, what do you think awaits academics and students?

- The pandemic process caused everything to accelerate even more. Web-based technologies have become indispensable in our lives and we have learned online education in a short time. The education sector is also evolving, and we, as the whole world, keep up with innovations. We even have to adapt. After the pandemic, I think some of the benefits of online education will continue to be used. Webinars, online conferences, online projects, online workshops made everything easier and enabled more participation and more work to be done at less cost. Of course, I think that such facilities will continue to be used. In addition, this period also contributed to more investment in artificial intelligence technologies and the more intensive use of such algorithms. This indicates that different learning models will enter our lives in the future.

“Use this period as a chance to close the gaps, learn new things and take time for yourself, and appreciate every moment. Because the moment you live never comes back…”

Finally, what would be your suggestions to the students of the Faculty of Fine Arts in this process?

- Thanks to the vaccination studies, it is planned to return to our normal life as soon as possible. Therefore, we expect a little more patience from our students. Use this period as a chance to close the deficiencies, learn new things and spare time for yourself, and appreciate every moment. Because the moment you live never comes back...

Thank you for your contribution.
Best Regards.
