Eda Türkay, a research assistant at the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema, made a paper presentation titled “Netflix’s Algorithmic Cultural Policies: Cultural Hegemony in the Global and Local Market” at the 5th International Media and Society Symposium.
Türkay, who conducted her studies on the digital broadcasting platform Netflix at the symposium organized with the theme of algorithmic culture, evaluated Netflix’s cultural policies and how algorithmic culture is positioned as a policy through original Turkish films. Arguing that algorithms direct viewers’ viewing preferences, Türkay stated that dominant cultures use algorithms as a tool to establish dominance in the global and local market.
Opening the discussion to the relationship between digital broadcasting and cultural studies, Türkay emphasized in his presentation that digital broadcasting platforms are not only content producers but also actors that shape cultural trends. He stated that algorithms are not only technical tools but also political elements that direct cultural preferences.
Noting that Netflix analyzes viewer behavior through algorithms and develops content strategies in line with these analyzes, Türkay stated that these strategies have established a kind of cultural hegemony over time. In his presentation, Türkay argued that algorithms are not only effective on individual preferences but also on global and local cultural structures, and stated that digital platforms have become a new power center in terms of cultural policies.
