 A Meeting was Held with the Career Center

The career meeting was held at Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF) meeting hall on Thursday, August 18 at 13.00 with the participation of Career Center unit experts and GSF faculty members.

In the meeting held, the Career Center Unit received the opinions of the faculty members of the Faculty of Fine Arts in order to reach students more easily and to direct the activities of the unit in line with the demands from the departments. Career Center Specialist Recep Bozan; He gave detailed information to the department heads about the activities of the center such as internship processes, peer mentoring program, job postings specific to departments. While giving details about some corporate companies that were interviewed, he underlined that it would be more effective to organize the events held in the departments through the career center. By discussing mutual expectations and demands, it was decided that directing the work to be done would produce more effective results.

Lecturer İbrahim Erol, Deputy Head of the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (English), expressed his views on the subject as follows:

The companies I work with in the market want students from us. At this point, there is a very serious demand from our students. We receive a lot of requests especially for job search and internship. As you know, the construction industry is locked up from time to time and our students are unemployed or unable to do internships. Even though we direct our students, there are too many students who are exposed. In our department, there are both construction site and office internships. For this reason, we need support twice in this process. We want to create a company catalog and direct our students to companies in this way. We think that CV bank, portfolio bank can be created. Because our students stand out with their portfolio. Firms are more interested in student portfolios.”

Asst. Prof. Dr. Murat Doğan, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, underlined questions such as what can be done on the basis of the faculty and what the career center's suggestions to GSF might be at this point. At the meeting, Assistant Career Center Specialist Aytuğçe Atilla, Career Center Specialist Recep Bozan and Head of Graphic Design Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Kuş also shared their views.

Aytuğçe Atilla, Assistant Career Center Specialist;

“Students also apply to us for internship and job opportunities. At this point, we are in contact with the departments. Some needs are specific, we can organize department and faculty-based workshops for this. We have a project that will be operational this year. We are planning to open a school in October for students to gain practice. It will be like a school within a school. Persons from institutions will provide training for one month. At the end of a month, final exams will be held. Successful students will be able to get job and internship opportunities in well-known companies.”

Career Center Specialist Recep Bozan; focused on the need to inform students;

We are currently negotiating to purchase a software. We are in talks with the Presidential Human Resources Office. There are talent gate and national internship center projects. We also give these directions to students. At this point, the number of students who are members of the system is very low, we must inform the students in order to increase this number.

Head of Graphic Design Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Kuş expressed his views as follows:

As GSF, one of the biggest challenges we almost always face is theoretical training. We have difficulties because our departments are applied. The works to be done will be carried out at the Faculty of Fine Arts, and for this they need to be prepared from a different perspective. Particular attention should be paid to this. Our students' field of study is not words, not memorization. What makes our students different is their own production. At this point, the portfolio provides this through visuals. Our students should be informed and orientated by the Career Center as often as deemed appropriate. In all other departments, there is a process of transferring the learned knowledge to the student. On the other hand, we ask the student to do it, we reinforce his strength, we pave the way, we contribute. In this sense, we may request more information for GSF students.”

After receiving the opinions of the faculty members, Recep Bozan talked about the orientation and peer mentoring activities and the positive feedbacks received as a result of these activities. It was discussed that new activity plans would be made in line with the suggestions and the meeting ended.

We would like to thank all faculty members and Career Center experts who participated.
