Successful Presentations from Department of Interior Architecture Students and Academics at “Youth and Climate Action Student Symposium”
Faculty members and students of the Department of Interior Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts at Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), participated in the "Youth and Climate Action Student Symposium" held online on October 1-2, 2026, as part of COP31, presenting their collaborative scientific research. Three papers presented at the symposium on critical topics-such as climate adaptation in vertical campuses, energy efficiency in interior design, and eco-city transformation-attracted significant interest from academics and attendees.
Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) continues its academic contributions in line with its mission to build a sustainable future and raise awareness about the climate crisis. At the “Youth and Climate Action Student Symposium”, organized online in collaboration with the IGU Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) and STA Congress, faculty members and students from the Department of Interior Architecture shared sustainable interior design solutions through their research.
Featured Studies Presented by the Department of Interior Architecture
During the symposium, papers prepared by undergraduate and graduate students under the guidance of faculty members of the Department of Interior Architecture included the following titles:
Climate Adaptation and Bio-Modules in Vertical Campuses
In the study titled *"Sensory Spatial Perception and Climate Adaptation in Vertical Campuses: An Interior Bio-Module Proposal for Istanbul Gelişim University," authored by student Azra Düzel and Asst. Prof. Dr. Başak Lale, a design model was simulated to transform transit floor halls in the IGU Tower Building into flexible, climate-friendly social areas through climate action and biophilic design principles.
Energy Efficiency and Climate-Responsive Interiors
In the paper presented jointly by student Nesrin Nazlı Çakmak and Asst. Prof. Dr. Minel Kurtuluş Gençay, titled *"Climate Sensitivity in Interior Design: Energy Efficiency and User Comfort,"* strategies were outlined on how bioclimatic architecture principles, daylight integration, and passive climate control can reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint without compromising spatial comfort.
Eco-City Ideology and Adaptive Reuse
In the presentation titled "Interior Space in Eco-City Ideology: An Inquiry into Adaptive and Sustainable Interior Space Parameters in the Case of Kapalı Maraş," prepared by student Feride Akıncı and Res. Asst. Eliz Mutlu Tekay, ecological and cultural sustainability in disused building stocks were examined at the scale of interior architecture.
Contribution to the Future of Climate-Resilient Design
The papers presented at this symposium, which supports the role of young researchers in climate policy, demonstrated once again that the discipline of interior architecture is not limited to aesthetics and construction technology, but possesses a strong perceptual, environmental, and sustainable sphere of action against the climate crisis.
