Research Assistant Başak Lâle's Spatial Inquiry: Her Work "Home" Exhibited on World Art Day

Başak Lâle, Research Assistant at Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Interior Architecture, added another work to her artistic and academic studies by participating in the International Online Group Exhibition held as part of the April 15, 2026 World Art Day. In this prestigious event, which centers on the universal unifying power of art and interdisciplinary dialogue, Lâle presented her original work titled "Home" to art lovers and the academic world.

Başak Lâle's exhibited work "Home" subjects the place-space context to a profound inquiry between "dwelling" and "home". In today's rapidly growing metropolises, the gap between the concept of "housing," a mechanical consequence of the need for shelter, and the concept of "home," woven with emotional codes such as belonging and privacy, is widening. In this work, Lâle focuses precisely on this gap. The study visualizes how modern housing projects, which change the silhouette of cities and resemble masses stacked on top of each other, struggle to become "homes" along with the lives within them. The artist reinterprets how these cold structures, designed as architectural units, clash with or transform through the individual's efforts to personalize and own them, using the technical possibilities offered by photography and digital art. An Interdisciplinary Platform: World Art Day Exhibition
This online exhibition, traditionally organized every year by the Faculty of Fine Arts of Istanbul Gelişim University and holding an important place in the art calendar, brought together many works from different disciplines in 2026. The platform, featuring works produced across a wide range of mediums including painting, digital art, typography, and installation, once again proved that art is not merely an aesthetic concern, but also a means of addressing social and spatial issues. The event, which saw the participation of valuable academics and artists from numerous universities, emphasizes the power and accessibility of art in the digitalized world.
Sharing her views on the participation process and the starting point of her work, Research Assistant Başak Lâle stated:
“Home actually depicts a spatial tension that we all experience but often take for granted. I wanted to highlight the effort of the stacked housing units in the urban fabric to transform from mere physical volumes into a home where people can take root. Against modern settlement patterns that sever the place-space connection, I aimed to make visible the individual's process of reinterpreting that space.”
Başak Lâle, who supports her theoretical studies in interior architecture with her artistic productions, reminds us with her work "Home" that space is not only a technical planning object but also a socio-psychological layer. We wholeheartedly congratulate Research Assistant Başak Lâle, who participated in this international event highlighting the power of art to create social awareness and transform spatial consciousness, and wish her continued success in both her academic career and her artistic journey.
