Innovative Workshop from the Department of Interior Architecture: Artificial Intelligence in Interior Architecture

As part of the "Artistic Development Series" organized by the Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Dean of Students Office—aimed at fostering student creativity and enabling them to explore diverse artistic disciplines—an "Artificial Intelligence in Interior Design Workshop" was held under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Dr. Minel Kurtuluş Gençay from the Department of Interior Architecture. The event, which took place on October 6, 2026, at Gelisim Tower, examined the role of artificial intelligence in spatial design and artistic processes, covering everything from concept development to visualization.

An "Artificial Intelligence in Interior Design Workshop" was held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 12:00 to 13:00 on the 17th floor of Gelişim Tower, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Minel Kurtuluş Gençay from the Department of Interior Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts at Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU).
Combining Artistic Creativity with Artificial Intelligence Technologies
In the workshop led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Minel Kurtuluş Gençay—which aimed to help students blend their digital design competencies with forms of artistic expression—the fundamental operating principles of artificial intelligence technologies and their current applications in interior design were examined. The differences between traditional design methods and AI-assisted creative processes were demonstrated to the students through visual examples.
Conducted in alignment with the interdisciplinary and innovative spirit of the "Artistic Development Series," the workshop emphasized that artificial intelligence is not merely a tool for producing final visuals, but an assistive technology that supports the designer's artistic vision and decision-making processes. The key use cases highlighted in the study were outlined as follows:
Concept and Artistic Idea Development: Processes for establishing the core idea, theme, and source of inspiration during the early stages of design;
Spatial Composition and Atmosphere Design: Exploring the spatial atmosphere by rapidly experimenting with various textures, materials, colors, and lighting scenarios;
Rapid Visualization and Representation: Efficiently transforming interior design concepts and alternative proposals into visualizations.
Awareness Regarding Future Design Practice
During the workshop conducted under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Dr. Minel Kurtuluş Gençay, it was emphasized that artificial intelligence tools do not replace a designer's unique creativity and expertise; rather, they should be positioned as powerful "supportive tools" that enrich the designer's ideas.
Through this artistic development activity aimed at unlocking students' creative potential, participants not only had the opportunity to integrate next-generation technologies into their professional workflows but also gained a strong awareness of the importance of AI-assisted design approaches in the future of interior architecture practice. The IGU Department of Interior Architecture continues to offer high-quality events that support students' academic, artistic, and technological development.
