Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Interior Architecture asst. Prof. Dr. Yaprak Özel and Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design asst. Prof. Dr.Zerrin Funda Ürük evaluated "The Effect of Plastic Material on Furniture Design and Forming Process".

The formation of furniture, which is an indispensable element and complement of living spaces, which offers beauty to people with its size, formation, and comfort depends on the usage areas, the features that can best meet the user's requests and needs, the selection, and the solutions. Therefore it has a wide variety of features it can be produced in color and texture as well as with many different materials. Even though the user's wishes and needs are one of the most effective factors in shaping, the answer to the question "What will this furniture be used for" which is put forward as its main function, always appears as the first question to be resolved at the design stage.

Answering the main function is at the stage of answering the question of “what will be used for” furniture design another effective factor to create a shape is the choice of material, which can vary depending on the area of use. Two groups of materials, natural and artificial, can be used in furniture design. Cost and applicability, having additional desired features depending on the usage area (such as moving, disassembling, etc.) affect the material selection by combining with the design on a common denominator. Wood, glass, metal, natural stones, composite materials, artificial woods, and plastics are used in furniture design and production. Plastic materials stand out as the material that can respond most rapidly to new technologies and leave the most room for trial and error for some groups.

The effects of plastic material, which offers many different form possibilities compared to other materials used in the furniture design and production process, on the design and shaping process of furniture can be listed as follows:

  • It offers comfort in reflecting organic forms to the design and easy solutions in detail. The desired shape can be created by bending or bending a single piece of the sheet as desired. If a mold can be made, durable furniture can be produced thanks to plastic material.

  • Size reduction, stackability, and ease to clean.

  • It is low cost. It is suitable for mass production. With a single mold, hundreds of pieces of the same shape and quality can be produced.

  • Due to the lightness of the material, it provides ease of use.

  • Furniture produced with plastic material is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

  • Thanks to its transparency feature, the load of furniture in the space is reduced, and the furniture can also be used to illuminate the space.

  • Plastics do not disappear in nature. However, designers are addressing this problem by producing new types of plastic. Plastic bottle, which is destroyed after being used and thrown away in nature, is under development. A large part of the existing waste plastics can be converted into new furniture and products by both energy and remelting. Plastic is recyclable depending on the material type. In addition, studies on the disposal of waste plastics are continuing.
