The “Büyükada Technical Trip”, which aims to provide the third and fourth year students taking the “IMI451 Conservation and Restoration” course at the Department of Interior Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts (FAF), Istanbul Gelişim University (İGU) with the opportunity to see and examine historical structures in Büyükada, was held on Tuesday, May 28. The technical trip, led by Asst. Prof. Amil Faruk Gezen from the Department of Interior Architecture, was attended by Res. Asst. Başak Lale, Res. Asst. Eliz Mutlu Tekay and twenty-six (26) students.
Opportunity to Examine Cultural Heritage Values
Examples of restoration and renovation projects were experienced on site during the trip. Students had the chance to observe construction techniques and different material applications used throughout history. The technical trip started with a visit to the Splendid Palace Hotel. Asst. Prof. Amil Faruk Gezen gave detailed information to the students about the hotel’s untouched historical texture, construction techniques of its structural elements and furniture. Following Splendid Palace, Büyükada District Public Library, Büyükada Literature Museum Library, Büyükada San Pacifico Latin Catholic Church, and Taş Mektep were visited in order. Some of the spaces that have undergone structural and some functional transformations were examined. During the trip, the streets of Büyükada were explored on foot, and all historical structures were examined with Gezen's narrations regarding their cultural texture.

Asst. Prof. Amil Faruk Gezen stated that he shared the happiness and excitement of the third and fourth grade students for seeing and experiencing the restoration works and many historical structures on site. Gezen stated that information was shared on restoration techniques and applications, architectural trends, materials used in historical structures, elements, sections and additions through examples during the trip, and thanked the Adalar District Public Library, Büyükada Literature Museum, İBB Taş Mektep Library and Splendid Palas Hotel Management.
