What would you like to say about the new cultural center to be opened?
G&G Arts Center actually delayed its opening for a year due to the pandemic environment. It was ready for the opening last year. However, the pandemic conditions that affected us all caused the opening of this center to be postponed. Of course, it is important for all of us to come together in a healthy environment and breathe the air of art that gives us morale and healing. Under the leadership of Güher-Gürdal Elçiçek, the center, which was allocated to the art scene with significant material and moral sacrifices, is located in the Beyaz Köşk space in Göztepe-Çiftehavuzlar. In this four-floor space, two floors of gallery space are arranged on two floors as spaces that will provide opportunities for art workshops, conversations and art meetings. It was aimed to bring art lovers together by creating meeting areas in its large garden.
Can you give information about the mission of the art center?
First of all, G&G Art Center aims to be a light and morale to its environment through art, without expecting any material return. It will be a center of attraction with the exhibitions, workshops and events of the important artists it will organize. In addition, it aims to provide students studying in the field of art with scholarships and various opportunities for them to show themselves in the art environment.
What would you like to say about Devrim Erbil's 'Variations' exhibition organized for the opening of the G&G Art Center?
Devrim Erbil is an invaluable artist, educator and artisan who has left his mark on the adventure of Turkish painting for the last 60 years. You will see his name in every area where art is spoken and exists. I graduated from Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) as his student. We have a special friendship beyond the teacher-student relationship. When the Art Center came to the fore as a project, the name Devrim Erbil naturally came to the fore. You know, Devrim teacher has been living in Bodrum for 1.5 years. We talked to him and he supported us in holding an exhibition with selected works that he reserved as a 'museum' official at this opening, and we organized an exhibition of about 50 works under the theme of 'Variations'. I am the curator. With the catalog article I wrote, I made evaluations about my teacher's place in Turkish painting. As a student, it was an honor for me.
