Design, Ethics, And Responsibility: A Future Perspective From Young Designer Yasin Emre Ergül

Yasin Emre Ergül, a student at Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Graphic Design (GRA), was featured in the 66th issue of the GSF E-Newsletter. Defining design not just as a profession but as a way of making sense of the world, Ergül shared inspiring views on a wide range of topics, from artificial intelligence and ethical responsibility to traditional heritage and the quest for a personal signature.

"Design as a Way of Making Sense of the World"

Immersed in lines, colors, and typography since his fine arts high school years, Yasin Emre Ergül explained how his visual perception has evolved during his university education. Stating that he used to focus solely on "aesthetics," the young designer emphasized that he now possesses a "designer’s eye" that analyzes the rhythm, balance, and mental interaction power of every visual.

A Hybrid Approach Between Technology and Tradition

Sharing his views on artificial intelligence and digital transformation—one of today’s most debated topics—Ergül stated that while traditional techniques must be preserved, it is also necessary to adapt to the speed offered by digital tools. Advocating for a "hybrid" model in design, Ergül expressed that he views AI as an assistant that supports a designer's creativity.

Legacy from Masters, Inspiration from Anatolia

Stating that he draws inspiration from the giants of Turkish graphic arts, such as Mengü Ertel and Bülent Erkmen, Ergül aims to blend local values with a universal language in his own design style. Expressing his desire to present Anatolia’s rich motifs to the world through a contemporary interpretation, the young talent believes this approach plays a critical role in preserving cultural identity.

"Design Can Be the Voice of the Voiceless"

Drawing attention to the power of design in social events, Ergül argued that designers must carry an ethical responsibility beyond mere aesthetics. By stating, "Design can be the voice of the voiceless," Ergül emphasized the importance of projects focused on social benefit and expressed that visual narratives can increase social empathy and the drive to take action.
