Res. Asst. Başak Lâle Participated in Docomomo_Turkey's 20th Anniversary Event

İstanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF), Interior Architecture Department Research Assistant Başak Lâle took part as a participant in Docomomo_Turkey's 20th Anniversary Event.

Docomomo_turkiye's 20th anniversary was celebrated with an online event on March 6, 2022 on its foundation day. At the event, speeches were made on Preston Bus Station, a contemporary internationally successful conservation effort of modern architectural heritage. Preston Bus Station, whose fate changed with scientifically supported public pressure while it was planned to be demolished, received the World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize in 2021. Sally Stone, who actively contributed to the preservation process of the building, shared her experience in this process with her speech titled “Brutal Activism: Rescuing Preston Bus Station”. She was active by sharing various information on these subjects. Research Assistant Başak Lâle, who participated in the event, expressed her views as follows:

“Especially, Docomomo Turkey, which provides a suitable environment for historical places under the threat of losing their original values, to find the place they deserve in current agenda topics and to introduce themselves, shared with its participants how an important but considered inactive building stock can be brought back to the environment with this event. Manchester School of Architecture, Master's Program Coordinator of Architecture and Reuse and Director of the School of Architectural Continuity,  Sally Stone explained in detail the process of re-functioning the Preston Bus Station structure, which she undertook, and reintroducing it to the environment it is in. The current state of the building, which was awarded with the World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize in 2021, is a well-resolved process in which not only the space is handled individually, but its place in the city's memory is emphasized with activities that require the active participation of the people of the region it is in, and its contextual value is highlighted as well as its architecture. I think it will be an important reference for future studies. The study, which can set an important precedent, especially in the re-functioning studies carried out in our country, is a re-functioning study that should be handled in detail by the researchers involved in the subject. I would like to thank the Docomomo Turkey team for this enjoyable and productive event and Sally Stone for sharing her experiences with us sincerely.”

We would like to thank Research Assistant Başak Lâle for her comments.
