Lecturer Dr. Esra Büyükemir Karagöz, who works within Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (ICM), participated with her scientific work in the Natural and Cultural Heritage Tourism Symposium held in Nevşehir between April 20-22, 2026. The restoration processes of historical buildings were discussed at the symposium, which was organized to protect natural and cultural heritage, ensure its sustainable use, and transmit it to future generations.
Restoration of the historical İsion Castle was examined
Within the scope of the symposium, Lecturer Dr. Esra Büyükemir Karagöz presented the paper titled "Evaluation of the Restoration of İsion Castle". The study examines the conservation, implementation, and restoration activities carried out at İsion-Beymelek Castle, an important defensive structure from the Hellenistic and Roman periods located within the borders of Lycia.
Contemporary conservation theories and restoration principles were emphasized
The research stated that fundamental conservation principles such as "minimal intervention", "distinctiveness", and "respect for the original material" were adopted during the restoration work carried out on the castle between April 2013 and November 2013. Evaluating that all examined interventions were carried out within the framework of contemporary conservation theory, the contributions of these practices to the legibility of the building's military architectural character and the preservation of its authenticity were emphasized.
We congratulate our esteemed faculty member, Lecturer Dr. Esra Büyükemir Karagöz, and wish her continued success.
