Res. Asst. Gökçe Uzgören's book chapter titled "Rethinking Airbnb in the Context of Gentrification" was published in the book On Space and Human: Current Approaches, Discussions, Studies, edited by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meliz Oğuz and published by IdealKent Publications. In the study, which Res. Asst. Gökçe Uzgören wrote together with her master's thesis advisor Prof. Dr. Asuman Türkün, it is aimed to re-discuss the different forms of displacement and exclusion in urban space through Airbnb, which is defined as the biggest player of the sharing economy platforms. While this discussion has been carried on over the role Airbnb has played in the processes of gentrification and displacement in Kadıköy Rasimpaşa (Historical Yeldeğirmeni) District since 2016, at the same time, what is the effect of the unexpected global epidemic and dramatic changes in the accommodation industry on short-term accommodation platforms such as Airbnb? The extent of its impact is also open to discussion.
The book, contributed by different researchers as authors, is (a) Urban Memory, Layers and Social Memory, (b) Urban Justice and Transformation in Space, (c) Urban Thresholds and Design, (d) Urban Mobility and Borders, (e) Information in Urban Planning. , Communication and Technology, (f) Alternative Approaches and Criticism in Planning, and (g) New Searches in Rural Planning and Planning.
From the book's introductory text:
“Focusing on "what is", "what is done", "changes" and "transformed" based on space, the book in your hand contains the translated, evolved and largely improved version of 33 episodes of Melis Oğuz's Space and Human program at Medyascope. While it is a compilation that takes the pulse of spatial studies, it is also a summary of an adventure due to the program realized in a certain time series.
Space, which seems to be the object of all urban actions or inactions, is ultimately the subject of all urban and human existence. Considered in this context, there are an infinite number of versions of space, an infinite number of forms that change according to time and the people who fill it. From this point of view, the book is an exciting work for those who want to think about space, which has become a very dynamic phenomenon for the city and people.”
We congratulate Res. Asst. Gökçe Uzgören and wish her continued success.
