Research Assistant Mustafa Dallı made the following statements about the "importance of earthquake-resistant building design" on the anniversary of the February 6 earthquakes;
“In these days when we commemorate the February 6 earthquakes, the rapid population growth and urbanization process in urban areas emphasize that earthquake resistance, which is an important element in building design, is of vital importance. Earthquakes stand out as a frequently encountered natural disaster, especially for countries like ours that are in earthquake zones. In this context, earthquake-resistant building design is not only an architecture-engineering issue but also a critical element in ensuring the safety of societies and their sustainable future.
Earthquake-resistant building design aims to minimize loss of life and property by increasing the durability of structures during earthquakes. This means that buildings designed by architectural-engineering standards can survive even under the influence of earthquakes and provide a safe shelter for their inhabitants. Additionally, earthquake-resistant building design allows emergency response teams and rescue efforts to be carried out more effectively.
Another important dimension of earthquake-resistant building design is the economic impact. The destruction caused by earthquakes is not only limited to loss of life but also causes economic losses. Buildings resistant to earthquakes increase the economic resilience of societies by contributing to the faster reconstruction of city infrastructure.
In this context, earthquake-resistant building design should be considered not only as a safety measure but also as part of long-term sustainable development strategies. Advances in engineering and architecture have allowed earthquake-resistant building design to become more effective and economical. Investments in this area increase the quality of life by ensuring that societies are better prepared against future earthquake risks. As a result, earthquake-resistant building design should be considered as an investment and should be considered as a priority to provide a safe living space for future generations.”
On these days when we commemorate the February 6 earthquakes, we remember with great sadness all our citizens who lost their lives in the earthquake and hope that it will not happen again.
