The second event of the "IAEDesign Talks" discussion series, organized by Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (English), titled "Ananas Woodworking Talk," was held online via the Google Meet platform on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 11:00 to 12:00.
The event, moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Enver Tatlısu, featured discussions on sustainability in design, environmentally friendly materials, and craftsmanship through Ananas Design+Crafts and Ananas Woodworking. Guest speakers Çağdaş Cantürk and Altuğ Toprak participated in the discussion.
We Support Craftsmanship and Local Production
Cantürk and Toprak emphasized the importance of contributing to the preservation of disappearing wooden craftsmanship and local production techniques due to the impact of industrialization. They underlined the need to revalue handcrafts, advocating for the preservation of both contemporary artisans and the legacy of all anonymous furniture designers throughout history.
During the event, which attracted great interest from students, the founders of Ananas Design+Crafts, Mr. Çağdaş Cantürk and Mr. Altuğ Toprak, made the following statements:
"A design approach independent of time ensures focusing on user experience rather than style and form. From a single line on paper to the final product, each individual product or product series should be shaped by the collaborative efforts of designers and craftsmen. As the Ananas design team, we design furniture that can be used in different spaces, targeting new living conditions. In addition to the designs produced by Ananas Design+Crafts, production processes of projects by interior designers, architects, or designers are carried out within Ananas Woodworking. Our productions, which started in Izmir and continue, are now accessible from many parts of the world."
We extend our thanks to Mr. Çağdaş Cantürk, Mr. Altuğ Toprak, and all the students who participated.
