Within the scope of DesignFest21, Lect. An Interview with Gizem Yücelen titled "Sustainability and Fashion in the Age of Digitalization"

On the first day of the online Design Festival organized by Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF), a talk titled "Sustainability and Fashion in the Age of Digitalization" was held.

Res. Asst. Zeynep Abaci performed it.

Res. Asst. The session, which started with Zeynep Abacı's introductory speech, continued with the questions she asked to Yücelen. First of all, he started his speech by talking about the content of the conversation. Then, after explaining how his path crossed with the concept of sustainability, he talked about his education life and career. He talked about the process of deciding to work in fashion while studying advertising. Then he talked about the process of establishing his own brand and the reflections of the concept of sustainability in the sector. He talked about the negativities and the elements that need to change. He then defined the concept of sustainability with these words:

“It is a concept that has been defined in many ways over time. But the word need in this first definition is actually a guide for us. At the end of a system that we don't need, but we feel like we need, and which would make us feel incomplete, we have become more craze of production and consumption than we need today. An endless swamp. For this reason, meeting needs and determining what we really need is a more accurate starting point rather than the continuity of the existing mode of production. After making this determination, while ensuring the continuity of the production of the things needed, as you said, to be able to protect all kinds of resources, to transfer them to the future, to exist today without stealing from the future.”

After the definition of sustainability, he talked about the responsibilities of the consumer and the producer for the sustainability of fashion, after discussing sustainability and fashion through the damage done to living things for the sake of production, consumption and consumption. Later, he expressed the effect of digitalism on fashion, which is the main theme of the design festival, with these words:

"When we consider the advantages of digitalization in the fashion industry, we need to look at the reflections of technological developments. For example, the use of cutting machines that generate less waste with newly developing technology is an important step towards a more sustainable fashion approach. Less waste means more power that we can save resources."

Finally, after talking about the adequacy of the digitalization movement in the fashion industry, the session ended with the questions of the participants being answered. Lecturer we would like to thank Gizem Yücelen and all our participants.
